La Palma by YSG Studio

Between Palms and Paintings

YSG Studio is known for its eclectic design with a global flair – founded by Yasmine Ghoniem, whose roots span Egypt, Australia and the Middle East. Her style: bold colours, playful materials and a truly distinctive design language. With La Palma, the studio transformed a beach house in Palm Beach, Sydney, into a sun-drenched retreat – inspired by Mexico, Ibiza and the Côte d’Azur. Exclusively for us, Yasmine shares her top tips on how to recreate the look at home.

This tiered seaside escape nestled amongst palm trees in Sydney’s Northern Beaches taps into carefree sun-dappled adventures along remote Mexican shores with a twist of the Côte d’Azur’s refinement,” is how Yasmine Ghoniem describes the vision behind La Palma. The starting point for everything? A single painting in the living room. Its colours, shapes and motifs are echoed throughout the interior – from hand-painted palm trees, birds and fish on walls and doors, to tropical prints on cushions and intricately woven raffia lampshades that float like sombreros above the dining table.

French-washed walls in rose and terracotta tones add warm accents throughout the house. In the master suite, the lines of a Matisse-inspired nude painting flow up to the ceiling, while in the en-suite bathroom, a mirror with a curved frame echoes the feminine contours. Art meets architecture – subtle, playful, and utterly charming.

The outdoor area has been completely opened up and revitalised: a bright pool, a BBQ area, and patterned stone slabs add a sense of lightness. The highlight? Round lounge chairs and colourful side tables that break up the clean lines and bring a touch of Mexican flair. Complemented by black-and-white striped awnings with a nostalgic charm – a breezy retreat full of style.
